Blogger Power has received an email from Suzanne Stanford of My Internet Safety Coach. To show our support for her effertos, we are going to copy and paste the contents of the document she sent us.

When your child’s innocence is lost, it is lost forever. If your child dies at the hands of a sexual predator, your life as you know it will never be the same!

Online crimes cross all socio-economic, cultural, color, religious and geographical boundaries. Online crimes against children are preventable!

I have drafted proposed legislation, Parents Against Predators Act (P.A.P.A.)

This will help make the Internet a safer environment for our youth.

P.A.P.A. would federally mandate that all websites providing electronic communication to minor children (chats, multi-user gaming, social networking) would have their auto-responder cross reference against the National Sex Offender Registry when an individual attempts to subscribe to their service. If listed in this registry, that individual would be prohibited from that site’s areas where children congregate.

Given that most children have cell phones with cameras, video, and are Internet enabled, the risk to their safety needs more protection NOW than ever!

A key concern of parents these days is that their child, while chatting online, is being lured by a pedophile/sex offender. Currently, there is no law in place preventing convicted sex offenders from engaging in electronic communication with minors.

As a parent, I find this outrageous and unacceptable! As an Internet safety expert and one who has received a Congressional Merit Award for the work I’ve done in this arena with and for children, I am moved to “take action”, but I need “your” help.

Currently, P.A.P.A. is being reviewed by Members of Congress, from both chambers, Republicans and Democrats alike. But, I cannot get this legislation passed on my own. Our elected officials need to know this is something wanted by their constituents. I need everyone’s help.

• According to the United States Attorney General’s office, there are approximately 600,000 convicted sex offenders in the National Sex Offender Registry.
• Approximately 100,000 of them are missing from the database.
• According the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (2007) 1 in 7 children have received an unwanted sexual solicitation on the Internet by a stranger (who wants to meet them).
• Gov. Schwarzenegger’s Sex Offender Task Force’s recent report stated: “106,000 registered sex offenders reside in California.”
• The report states that 10,000 of them “who are the most dangerous” are on parole.

Our children must be protected from these individuals. P.A.P.A. will definitely help.

The U.S. Customs Service estimates that there are more than 100,000 Web sites offering child pornography - which is illegal worldwide. Revenue estimates for the industry range from about $200 million to more than $1 billion per year. These unlawful sexual images can be purchased as easily as shopping at Amazon.com. “Subscribers” typically use credit cards to pay a monthly fee of between $30 and $50 to download photos and videos, or a one-time fee of a few dollars for single images. (Red Herring Magazine, 1/18/02)

A 2006 report cited the child pornography business is estimated at $3 billion annually.

As parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, teachers, or neighbors, we must all “step up to the plate” to protect our children from being lured and seduced on the Internet. Although responsible parenting is key to keeping our children safe in this environment, the reality is that we can’t always be there looking over our children’s shoulders. And while it is vital that our children learn safe and responsible Internet behavior to keep themselves safe, the reality is that pre-teens and teens are engaging in risky online behavior by posting inappropriate and sexually explicit photos of themselves online, as well as giving out personal identifying information. They have no idea what danger they are courting. Their youth gives them the false security that “nothing” will ever happen to them. They believe they are safe. If only that were true.

Be a part of this groundbreaking effort to get P.A.P.A. signed into law.

Due to the anonymity component of the Internet, it is easy for sex offenders to hide behind a computer screen – trading ”lurking in parks” to “trolling the Internet”. Using the Internet is safer for them, given they are not allowed to be in areas where children congregate. This cyber playground provides them the environment to meet children “under cover”.

This legislation would remove that cover; provide less opportunity, and would help enforce existing restrictions as it pertains to being where children congregate.

Unfortunately, P.A.P.A. won’t keep all of these individuals from being where our children socialize or play games online, but at least convicted sex offenders whose names are on the National Sex Offender Registry will be excluded, thus creating a safer online community for our youth.

This IS NOT a political issue. It is a necessary means to help protect minor children from convicted sex offenders who want to use websites catering to minor children for the sole purpose of contacting them via email, chats, social networks, and multi-user games. These individuals should NOT be in these areas!

Pornografie – Eine Lebensart?

Irgendetwas fehlt. Junge Teenager, ja sogar zehn oder elf Jahre alte (oder sogar noch jüngere!) Kinder verhalten sich anders. Die Art, wie sie gehen, sprechen und handeln, hat sich verändert. Sie sind nicht schüchtern. Sie sind nicht unschuldig. Sie sind… keine Kinder. Nein, nicht alle, aber doch so viele von ihnen. Einige geraten in ernsthafte Schwierigkeiten; viele leben ein Verhalten aus, das man sich kaum vorstellen möchte.

Es gibt so viele Probleme und sie stehen so häufig in Wechselwirkung miteinander. Doch wir möchten hier keine Diskussion über die Gefahren von Drogen und Alkohol oder dem gewalttätigen Einfluss von Gangs ins Leben rufen. Wir analysieren eine ganz andere heimtückische Beeinflussung: Pornografie.

Sie ist auf den Displays ihrer Mobiltelefone, in ihren Songs, in Magazinen und Büchern, auf DVDs und natürlich auch online. 

Lassen Sie uns einen Blick auf erschreckende Statistiken werfen (laut Jerry Ropelato, Geschäftsführer von Top10 Reviews):

• 4,2 Millionen pornografische Seiten – 12% aller Seiten im World Wide Web
• 2,5 Milliarden pornografische E-Mails täglich – 8% aller E-Mails
• Pornografie ist weltweit eine 57 Milliarden Dollar Industrie
• Männer, die zugeben, während der Arbeit Pornografie zu konsumieren – 20%
• Erwachsene US-Bürger, die regelmäßig pornografische Internetseiten besuchen – 40 Millionen (!)
• Erwachsene, die zu ihrer sexuellen Neigung im Internet stehen – 10%
• Anteil männlicher / weiblicher Besucher von Pornoseiten – 72% männlich, 28% weiblich

Pornografie ist also in der Tat unter uns Erwachsenen sehr verbreitet. Doch es ist eine wahre Tragödie, dass Pornografie auch im Leben unserer Kinder eine immer größere Rolle spielt:

• Durchschnittsalter beim ersten Kontakt mit Pornografie im Internet: 11 Jahre
• Größte Konsumentengruppe von Internetpornografie: 12 – 17-Jährige
• 15 – 17-Jährige mit mehrfacher “Hard-Core”-Erfahrung: 80%
• 8 – 16-Jährige, die online einen Porno angeschaut haben – 90% (die Meisten während ihrer Hausaufgaben)

Was ist nun verkehrt an diesem Bild? Ist Ihr Kind ein Konsument von Online-Pornos? Vielleicht ja, auch wenn Sie sich das nicht vorstellen können.

Die Statistiken lügen nicht. Als Erwachsene sind wir Konsumenten legaler Pornografie (wir sprechen hier nicht über die illegale und abscheuliche Kinderpornografie, obwohl dies sicherlich ein ganz ähnlicher Horror ist). Doch als Erwachsene haben wir auch Verantwortung zu tragen. Wir müssen die Kinder unserer Welt beschützen.

Wir möchten das Recht auf freie Meinungsäußerung und den legalen Handel nicht einschränken. Doch wir müssen die Unschuld unserer Kinder unermüdlich verteidigen.

Würden Sie auch dann noch online gehen, um kostenlose Pornos zu suchen, wenn Sie wüssten, dass Ihr achtjähriges Kind Ihren Spuren folgt und dasselbe sieht? Könnten Sie nachts weiterhin gut schlafen, wenn Sie wüssten, dass Ihre 13-jährige Tochter weiß, was „Gang Bang“ bedeutet? Was, wenn Ihr 14-jähriger Sprössling eines Tages wegen Vergewaltigung verhaftet würde und sein Verstand voller Bilder ist, an die Sie nicht einmal zu denken wagten. Was halten Sie von einem andersartigen, sexuellen Verhalten, wie sexuelle Folter? Sie möchten sich das nicht einmal vorstellen, oder?

Idealerweise würden wir alle aufhören, solche Abscheulichkeiten zu konsumieren. Doch wir leben nun mal nicht in einer idealen Welt. Und auch wenn wir selbst die Konsumierung von Pornografie ablehnten, so würde dies unsere Kinder in Zukunft noch lange nicht davor bewahren, über derartige Seiten zu stolpern. Was können wir tun?

Eltern können Software wie NetNanny kaufen und installieren. (Leider ist diese Software nicht kostenlos zu erhalten, doch 40 Dollar sind angesichts der Computer- und Internetkosten nicht viel.) Das ist ein Anfang und wird die eindeutigsten Seiten blockieren. Natürlich hilft es auch, ein wachsames Auge auf Ihre Kinder zu halten. Platzieren Sie den Computer an einem offenen Bereich des Hauses, wo die Kids zögern werden, einen Blick auf Seiten erhaschen zu wollen, die sie nicht besuchen sollten.

Sie können jedoch weder jeden Schritt Ihrer Kinder noch die der anderen kontrollieren. Die ganze Gesellschaft wird verletzt, wenn Kinder pornografische Bilder entdecken.

Und auch Kinder brauchen Privatsphäre. Sie müssen in der Lage sein, sich offen ausdrücken zu dürfen, ohne befürchten zu müssen, dass in ihre Intimsphäre eingedrungen wird. Sie können sich sicherlich vorstellen, was passieren mag, wenn sie Freunde besuchen?

Leider lässt die bewusste Entscheidung seitens der Betreiber pornografischer Seiten, ihre Inhalte für Kinder leicht zugänglich zu machen – tatsächlich sogar zielgerichtet Kinder durch Domain-Namen, die den Namen von Zeichentrickfiguren sehr ähneln, z.B. Pokeman, anzulocken –, der Gesellschaft keine andere Wahl, als eine Veränderung zu fordern. Darum noch mal: Was können wir tun?

Wir rufen Blogger auf – für ein sichereres Web!

Wir können unsere Stimmen gemeinsam erheben, um die vernünftige Forderung an alle Webmaster von “Erwachsenen-Seiten” zu richten:

Bitte richten Sie einen Passwort-geschützten LogIn-Bereich ein, bevor Sie den Zugang zu Inhalten, die ausschließlich für Erwachsene geeignet sind, ermöglichen. Wir verstehen, dass der Verkauf von Pornografie Ihr Geschäft ist und wir erkennen Ihr Recht auf legalen Lebensunterhalt an. Doch bitte verstehen auch Sie unsere berechtigten Sorgen und arbeiten Sie mit uns zusammen. Sie zeichnen Ihre Website bereits mit dem Hinweis „Warnung: Inhalte für Erwachsene“ aus. Kinder, die keine rechtmäßigen Kunden Ihres Produktes sind, ignorieren diese Warnung jedoch. Um sie nun also von dem direkten Zugang zu expliziten Bildern, Texten und Sounds abzuhalten, wäre ein Passwort-geschützter LogIn-Bereich die einfachste Lösung. Keine „kostenlose Tour“ mehr, bevor ein Besucher grundlegende Informationen bereitstellt.

Ja, es ist richtig, dass Kinder sich dennoch einloggen könnten – aber nicht so viele, wie man meinen würde. Die Angst und die Scham, erwischt zu werden, sind entscheidende Hindernisse.

Somit rufen wir nun Blogger und alle anderen, die sich sorgen, auf, uns bei diesem besonderen Gesuch an Porno-Webmaster zu unterstützen. Es scheint nur ein kleiner Schritt zu sein, doch das ist es nicht. Ein Passwort-geschützter LogIn-Zugang hält kleine Kinder von extremen pornografischen Bildern fern. Es wird ältere Kids nicht davon abhalten, einen Account auf Pornoseiten zu eröffnen, doch bis die Kinder das „ich-mach-mal-einen-Account“-Alter erreichen, bleibt uns genug Zeit (oder sollte uns genug Zeit bleiben), um sie zu erziehen.

Lassen Sie uns sehen, wie viel geballte Kraft in unseren vereinten Stimmen (und Tastaturen) liegt! Wir sind eine starke Gemeinschaft; wir sollten beweisen, dass unsere Stimme zählt. Letzten Endes werden uns die Porno-Webmaster zuhören. Sie sind von erwachsenen, zahlungsfähigen Kunden abhängig, die sich ebenfalls in unseren Online-Gemeinschaften bewegen. Wir werden auch an Politiker in der ganzen Welt herantreten. Wenn die Betreiber pornografischer Webseiten nicht reagieren, so werden wir die Regierungen drängen, einen Passwort-Schutz zu verlangen.

Dies ist KEINE Zensur; es ist kein Angriff auf jedermanns Ausdrucksfreiheit. Es ist schlichtweg gesunder Menschenverstand. Selbst der “Hustler” wird in einer Plastikumhüllung geliefert. Diese Folie beeinflusst weder Hustlers freie Rede noch hält sie legitimierte Kunden davon ab, die Inhalte zu konsumieren. Was wir jetzt benötigen, ist ein ähnlicher Schutz für das Internet.

Lassen Sie die Kinder nicht im Stich. Machen Sie mit; schreiben Sie in Ihren Blogs über dieses Thema. Verwenden Sie die Logos in Ihrem Blog als ProBono-Werbeverlinkung auf diese Seite.

Oder sprechen Sie es laut aus. Sie müssen nicht auf diesen Artikel verlinken, Sie brauchen nicht einmal unsere Namen zu erwähnen. Verschaffen Sie sich einfach nur Gehör. Bitten Sie auch Ihre Freunde, dieses Thema in ihre Blogs aufzunehmen: Macht das Web sicherer für Kinder – Passwort-geschützte LogIn-Bereiche auf Pornoseiten für alle expliziten Materialien, keine kostenlosen Clips, Touren oder Bilder mehr ohne LogIn! Je mehr Stimmen, desto besser. Lassen Sie uns sprechen, bis jemand zuhört!

Pornography – A way of Life?

Something is missing. Young teenagers, even kids ten or eleven year old (or even younger!) act differently. The way they walk, talk and act has changed. They are not shy. They are not innocent. They are not … children. No, not all of them, but so many of them. Some get into serious trouble; some act out with deviant behavior you’d find unthinkable.

There are so many problems, and they are so often inter-related. But we’re not going to get into a discussion here about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, or the violent influences of gangs. We are going to analyze another insidious influence: pornography.

It’s on the displays on their mobile phones, in the songs they listen to, in magazines and books, DVDs and, of course, on-line.

Let’s take a look at a terrifying statistics (according to Jerry Ropelato, CEO of Top10 Reviews):

• 4.2 million pornography sites – 12% of all sites on the worldwide web
• 2.5 billion pornographic emails sent daily – 8% of all email
• Pornography is a $57 billion industry worldwide
• Men admitting to accessing pornography at work – 20%
• US adults who visit Internet pornography websites regularly – 40 million (!)
• Adults admitting Internet sexual addiction – 10%
• Breakdown of male/female visitors to pornography sites – 72% male, 28% female

So pornography is indeed pervasive in our adult culture. But the real tragedy is that porn is increasingly pervasive in children’s lives: /p>

• Average age of first Internet exposure to pornography: 11 years old
• Largest consumer group for Internet pornography: 12-17 year olds
• 15-17 year olds having multiple hard-core exposures: 80%
• 8-16 year olds having viewed porn online – 90% (most while doing homework)

Now what’s wrong with this picture? Is your child an on-line porn consumer? Probably yes, even if you don’t think so.

The statistics do not lie. As adults, we are consumers of legal pornography(we are not talking about the illegal and hideously grotesque child pornography, although it is certainly a related horror). But as adults we do have some responsibilities as well. We must protect the children of our world.

We are not talking about restricting legitimate free speech and legal commerce. But we must be adamant in protecting the innocence of our children.

Would you still go online, looking for free porn, knowing that your eight-year old child might follow your trail and see the same thing? Would you sleep well at night knowing that your 13- year-old daughter knows what “gang-bang” means? What if your 14-year-old son was arrested for rape one day, his brain messed up with images you do not even dare to think about? What about deviant sexual behavior like sexual torture? You don’t want to think about it, do you?

Ideally, we would all stop being consumers of this filth. But we don’t live in an ideal world. And even if we stop our own consumption of pornography, this will not stop children from stumbling upon such sites in the future. What can we do?

Parents can buy and install software like NetNanny. (It’s too bad this software isn’t made freely available, but the $40 isn’t much compared to the cost of the computer and Internet service.) That’s a start and it will block most explicit sites. Keeping a watchful eye over your children helps, too, of course. Keep the family computer in an open area of the house where they will be reluctant to sneak on to sites they shouldn’t visit.

But you cannot control everything your children do, nor can you watch out for the children of others. All society is hurt when any children are exposed to pornographic images.

And children do need their private sphere. They need to be able to express themselves freely, without being afraid of having their intimacy invaded. And guess what might happen when they visit their friends?

Unfortunately, the deliberate decision by porn site operators to make their content easily accessible to children – and, in fact, by deliberately preying on children by creating domain names that are similar to the names of cartoon characters like Pokeman – leaves society no choice but to demand change.

So, again, what can we do?

For a Safer Web – We’re Calling Out Bloggers

We can unite our voices to send out a common sense request to all the “adult site” webmasters:

Please require a password-protected login before allowing even free access to explicit adult content. We understand that selling porn is your business and we respect your right to make a legal living. But understand our legitimate concerns and work with us. You already have the “warning adult content” on your websites. Yet kids, who are not legal customers of your product, ignore the warning. So to prevent them from having direct access to explicit images, texts and sounds, the simplest way is to have a password-protected login. No more “free tours” before a visitor supplies basic information.

It’s true that children might login as well, but not so many as one may think. The fear and shame of being caught are still crucial stoppers.

So we call out the bloggers and everyone else out there who cares enough to help us deliver this special appeal to porn webmasters. It might seem like a little step, but it’s not.

A password-protected login prevents small kids from having direct access to extreme pornographic images. It will not stop older kids from actually making accounts to the porn sites, but until the children reach the “let me make an account” age, we’ll have enough time (or should have enough time) to educate them.

Let’s see if what collective power there is in our united voices (and keyboards!), shall we? We are a strong community; we should prove that our voices matter. And the porn webmasters will listen, eventually. They depend on adult paying customers who are in our on-line communities as well. Those webmasters who demonstrate civic awareness and responsibility will benefit in the market, just as any corporation must be mindful of its reputation.

And we are speaking to political leaders through out the world as well. If the adult website operators don’t respond with positive action, then we will urge governments to require password protection.

This is NOT censure; it’s not an attack on anyone’s freedom of expression. It’s common sense. Even Hustler is delivered in a plastic foil wrapper. That wrapper does not inhibit Hustler’s free speech, nor restrict legitimate customers from consuming its content. Now we need similar safeguards for the web.

So don’t let the children down. Join us; write about this issue in your blogs. Use the logos on your blog as a pro bono advertisement linking to this site.

Or just speak out. You don’t need to link to this article, you don’t even need to mention our names. Just make your voice heard. Ask your friends to blog on the same topic as well:
